BANGALORE: Members of the Legislative Council on Thursday welcomed the decision to expand the midday meal scheme up to the 10th standard, but urged the Government not to entrust the job of cooking and kitchen maintenance to teachers at the high school level. Participating in the debate on the Budget, Y.A. Narayanaswamy, an independent member representing the teachers' constituency, said the implementation of the scheme had been entrusted to teachers at the primary school level because of various compulsions. But doing the same thing at the high school level would affect the quality of education, he warned. Supporting the view, many members, including Shashil G. Namoshi and `Mukhyamantri' Chandru (BJP), M.P. Nadagouda (JD-S) and V.R. Sudarshan (Congress), said the job of cooking and kitchen maintenance should be entrusted to non-governmental organisations. Motamma (Congress) urged the Government to increase the wages being paid to women appointed under the scheme for kitchen maintenance and washing utensils.
`Provide milk'
Mr. Sudarshan said if the Government had reservations about providing eggs to children as part of the midday meal, then milk should be supplied. Such a measure would also benefit the Karnataka Milk Federation, he said. Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy said the Government had noted the suggestions made by the members. The Government had already decided to increase the remuneration of those employed for kitchen maintenance to Rs. 1,000, he said.
