9 mm carbine stolen from police armoury

BANGALORE: A 9 m.m. carbine (automatic rifle) has been stolen from the armoury of the City Armed Reserve (CAR) Police Headquarters here on Mysore Road.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (CAR) J.J. Nayak, who is in charge of the armoury, has lodged a complaint in this regard with the Cottonpet police on Wednesday, police sources told The Hindu on Thursday.

Additional Commissioner of Police N.S. Megharick said the carbine had been missing since June last. Since June 22, 2006, it had not been issued to any policeman and during the half-yearly stock verification it came to light that the weapon was missing. "The weapon is missing, but not stolen," he said.

Mr. Megharick said as outsiders had no access to the highly secured armoury, the suspicion was that someone in the department might have taken away the rifle. This is the second incident in the recent months. Some time ago a revolver of a sub-inspector was stolen from the Byappanahalli police station. According to the sources, it took over six months for the sub-inspector to trace the revolver. Investigation revealed that a history-sheeter had stolen the revolver from the police station when he had come there to sign the register.

Annoyed over the theft of the revolver, the sub-inspector had decided to put in his papers. But a senior police officer sternly instructed him to first trace the revolver and then quit his job, the sources said.
