Child abuse

Abuse and exploitation have a serious impact on the child's well being and development (editorial "Chilling scenario of child abuse," March 28). So many laws have been passed and action plans drawn up to address the issue. Protecting our children from all sorts of violence and exploitation is indeed the burning need of the hour.

The wide prevalence of child abuse is a real cause for concern. In this context, the media, which are full of violence and sex, should be more responsible and conscious of their duty towards the nation.

Parents must stop fighting shy of discussing sex with children. They should also refrain from frightening their children by invoking images of ghosts, superstitions, etc. Paedophiles prey upon such fears of children and prevent them from talking about the abuse heaped on them. Parents should remember that sexual abuse leaves an indelible mark on the minds of children.
