Letters to the Editor
India's mainstream media do not focus on the common man's plight. They are obsessed with glamour and glitz. The first two weeks of the month were full of news of the Elizabeth Hurley-Arun Nayar wedding. The media went to town about their dress, guest list, menu, and so on. Now comes the news of the Aishwarya Rai-Abhishek Bachchan wedding. The drama that started with Aishwarya Rai going to the Sankat Mochan temple with the Bachchan family is poised to reach a climax. In a country where 30 per cent of the people live below the poverty line, where girl children are killed, where thousands of children are undernourished and farmers commit suicide almost every day, should the media give undue importance to such events?
