Bangalore: Unable to decide between conflicting demands, the Government has decided to scrap the proposal to include either egg or milk in the midday meal for 58 lakh children of government schools. According to sources, funds meant for this will now be diverted to extend the scheme up to 10th standard and to aided schools, two schemes announced in the Budget.
Existing package
The existing meal package comprisesrice, dal and vegetables. The proposal to include egg was meant to augment the nutrient value of the meal. This announcement, made by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, was opposed by coalition partner BJP and heads of various Hindu religious organisations who argued in favour of milk. This forced the Chief Minister to backtrack on his promise in mid-January. Milk was proposed as an alternative to eggs. But the logistical problems involved in procuring and distributing milk and the cost involved virtually ruled out the option.
