BHUBANESWAR: Mumbai-based well-known Odissi dance institution Smitalay, founded in memory of actress Smita Patil by her friend and noted Odissi dancer-choreographer Jhelum Paranjpe, and Bhubaneswar-based Srjan, an institution founded by Padma Vibhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra, will jointly host `Samsmaranam', a dance festival as a tribute to the legendary guru on his third death anniversary in Mumbai on April 7. Speaking to The Hindu over phone from Mumbai, Jhelum explained `Samsmaranam' was conceptualised by Srjan director Ratikant Mohapatra, son of guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, to pay homage through dance every year as his birth anniversary is being celebrated through a national festival of dance and music. "There could be no better way of expressing our love and respect for the man who was synonymous with Odissi," remarked Ratikant.
Kolkata festival
"We moved to Mumbai for the event this year as my father's senior disciples wished to put up a collaborative programme there and Smitalay shouldered the responsibility," Ratikant said, and added that there would be a similar event in Kolkata on April 18 and 19 to be hosted by Kolkata-based disciples in association with Srjan. `Samsmaranam' will be organised at Manik Sabhagriha in Bandra West.
