Slum dwellers gherao RDO

Staff Reporter

They have been on a relay fast for one week seeking house site pattas

ANANTAPUR: The activists of CPI (M) and residents of several slums located on the outskirts of the town laid a siege to the RDO's office here on Thursday demanding house site pattas. Poor families living in Vidayaranya Nagar, Adarsha Nagar, Sundarayya Colony, Prajashakti Nagar, Mahadevi Colony and others lead by CPI (M) leaders prevented RDO A.V. Ramprasad from entering the office by blocking the entrance.

Speaking at the protest, party leaders -- G. Obulakonda Reddy, V. Rambhupal, P. Prasoona, K.A. Ratnaiah, A. Manohar, Rasool and others, alleged that the State Government was denying house site pattas to the poor by biding time in the name of `Rajiv Gruhakalpa, Rajiv Swagruha and Indiramma Rajayam' programmes.

There was no response from the officials concerned though the residents have been agitating for more than two years.

Residents of the slums were on relay fast for the last one week in front of the RDO's office with one colony people going on fast everyday, they said. They would continue their protest till they get a clear assurance from the officials.

They explained that poor families in Vidaranya Nagar were living there for the last 30 years, for the last 10 years in Adarsha Nagar, for the last 12 years in Sundarayya Colony and for the last two years in other colonies without any basic amenities.

The RDO assured them of house sites soon and directed the revenue officials to visit the colonies immediately for taking up a survey. Residents told them not to buckle under pressure from the ruling party leaders and urged issuance of pattas at the earliest.
