Where education and diplomacy meet

This could be your chance to pursue a fully funded research in England. The British Council has announced doctoral scholarships for the year 2007-08 under the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). Ten such scholarships are available for Indians to carry out research leading to Ph.D. and D.Phil. in British institutions.

The scholarships are aimed at strengthening educational relations between India and Britain over the next five years so that the two countries become each other's partner of choice in education.

During his visit to India in 2005, British Prime Minister Tony Blair had announced a commitment of 10 million pounds for development of academic links between his country and India.

UKIERI was designed to facilitate a sea change in research and education cooperation between the two countries.

Though applications from candidates in all disciplines are welcome, the majority of the awards are likely to be in areas related to science and technology.

The scholarships are fully funded, including academic fees, international airfare and a monthly stipend to cover living expenses.

Applicants should be Indian nationals below 35 years of age on May 15, 2007, and hold a valid Indian passport.

They must have an excellent academic track record and should be applying for a doctoral research degree in a UK university. They should be planning to begin study by September/October this year.

Candidates for the scholarships will be selected through a process of short listing from the received applications, followed by personal interviews that will be held in one of the British Council offices in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata or Mumbai.

Application forms and guidelines can be downloaded from www.ukieri.org.

The closing date for receiving applications is May 15. -- Parul Sharma
