Protest over sitting fee delays defence arguments in blasts case

Staff Reporter

Upset over delay in disbursal of fee

Coimbatore: The defence arguments in the serial blasts case before the Judge of the Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases, K. Uthirapathy were delayed for nearly 90 minutes on Thursday following a move by the defence lawyers to go on a flash court boycott in protest against failure of the State Government in disbursing their sitting fee for the last two months.

There are two advocates engaged by the undertrials besides the 26 State brief counsel appointed by the State through the Legal Services Authority for defending the undefended accused. The State is paying Rs 2,500 a day for advocates from outstation and Rs 1,500 for those from Coimbatore.

Officials clarified that the process for disbursement of sitting fee was already under way and the delay was only procedural, senior defence counsel P. Thirumalairajan said. Following assurances, the defence arguments commenced around noon.
