Staff Correspondent

ON HIGH PRICES: Members of the BJP Mahila Morcha staging a dharna in Bellary on Thursday.

BELLARY: Members of the Bellary district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha staged a demonstration here on Thursday in protest against the rise in prices of essential commodities. They were demanding that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government step down for its alleged failure to check the price rise.

The activists of the morcha staged a dharna by squatting on the road at the Gadagi Chennappa circle and shouting anti-UPA slogans, demanding a rollback of prices. They then took out a procession from the Durgamma temple to the Deputy Commissioner's office, where they submitted a memorandum addressed to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

In their memorandum, BJP leaders have urged the President to dissolve the UPA Government for its "failure" to check the price rise.

Comparative list

They submitted a comparative list of the present prices of essential commodities and those that existed during the tenure of the previous BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government.

President of the morcha G. Padmavati Yadav, President of the district unit of the BJP Somashekar Reddy, and zilla panchayat vice-president K.A. Ramalingappa participated.
