Congress MLA to be prosecuted

TIRUPATI: The magistrate court of Srikalahasti has issued orders for the prosecution of local Congress MLA S.C.V. Naidu for his alleged involvement in the open voting controversy. Information reaching here on Thursday said that the court had asked a senior police officer based at Tirupati to initiate the necessary prosecution proceedings and file the chargesheet against the MLA. - Special Correspondent

Exchange of fire

ONGOLE: Maoists escaped after exchanging fire with the police at Nallaguntla in Komarole mandal of Prakasam district on Thursday. When the police searched the area later, they recovered five kit bags, one tapancha, one wireless set and 50 detonators. - Special Correspondent

Ex-naxalite held

BELLARY: The anti-naxal squad led by M.R. Reddy, Inspector, arrested a former naxalite Mustur Ravi of Andhra Pradesh from a rented house here on Thursday. . Ravi was associated with the People's War and and wanted in several cases in Anantapur district. The squad stepped up vigil following Ravi's confession that there were several former naxalites residing in the city. - Correspondent

Lord's annual fete

TIRUMALA: The three-day annual Vasanthotsavam of Lord Venkateswara will begin on March 31. at Vaibhavotsava mandapam in front of the main temple complex. Two girls drowned

ANANTAPUR: Two girls — Manjula (12) and Laxmidevi (15) — ere drowned in Subbarayasagar reservoir near Sanjeevapuram of Putlur mandal on Thursday when they tried to bring their cattle to the shore from the water. Their bodies were fished out by villagers an hour after the accident. - Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM: Sixty persons were hospitalised in Ragunadhabanzar village in Kallur mandal on Thursday. Villagers who celebrated Sri Ramanavami in a big way distributed lemon rice in public places. Many of those who had the rice were taken ill. - Staff Reporter

Chowdoji Rao appointed UGC Dean

ANANTAPUR: The Executive Council meeting of Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) held at Hyderabad on Thursday appointed K. Chowdoji Rao, a professor in the Polymer Science Department as Dean of UGC affairs of the university.

The meeting was learnt have given full additional charge of Registrar to Venkata Subbaiah and that of Dean of College Development Council to G.H. Philip. — Staff Reporter

Demand to regularise RTC workers' services

KADAPA: APSRTC should regularise services of 3,600 casual workers, appointed in the State between 1999 and March 2007, in tune with an agreement reached with the management, RTC National Mazdoor Union State secretary D. Satyanarayana demanded on Thursday.

Addressing RTC employees who staged relay hunger strike in front of the bus stand here, he demanded scrapping of contractual appointments and extension of all facilities to casual workers on a par with regular staff members. Regularisation of casual workers would reduce workload on regular workers, he observed. Staff Reporter

Plea for proper water supply

KURNOOL: CPI (M) supporters staged a demonstration at the Municipal Corporation Office urging the authorities to ensure proper water supply to Ganesh Nagar and Nanduri Prasadarao Nagar in the city. They said the two colonies are facing acute water shortage in the absence of proper facilities. The protesters said they would intensify the agitation if water was not supplied through tankers. - Staff Reporter

CHITTOOR: The Lok Adalat held here at District Court premises on Thursday under the presidentship of District Judge and Chairman Legal Services Authority K. Appa Rao settled 15 pending loan cases relating to Greamspet Sapthagiri branch. The loanees paid Rs. 76,700 as the bank has extended several subsidies. - Correspondent

Four arrested for encouraging copying

NIZAMABAD: The Lingampet police on Thursday arrested four employees of the Education Department under Section 25 of the Prohibition of Malpractice in Examination Act, 1997, for allegedly encouraging copying in SSC Public Examination. According to Sub-Inspector Deeravath Hussain, the accused - K. Vithal, Chief Superintendent, Venkateswarlu, Departmental Officer, Vidya volunteers P. Pradeep and Sk. Yousuff - were taken into custody when they were found leaking Mathematics Paper-I at the Zilla Parishad High School for Girls on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Ten officials suspended

NALGONDA: Over 93 students were debarred and ten officials, including a Mandal Education Officer, were suspended from their services for alleged malpractices committed during tenth class examination.

District Education Officer Masthanaiah said that 17 students were booked on Thursday alone for resorting to malpractices. Chowtuppal MEO Pandurangaiah and nine teachers had been suspended on the charge of dereliction of duties, he said adding that 75 invigilators had been relived of their duties on the same ground.

Nine huts gutted

NIZAMABAD: Nine huts were gutted at Polkampet village of Lingampet mandal in the wee hours of Thursday. However, no human loss was reported, according to the information reaching here.

The fire, which broke out in a hut, soon engulfed the area destroying nine huts. Property worth about Rs.2.5 lakhs was damaged. — Staff Reporter

Village servants stage `rasta roko'

Kakinada: Village servants, owing allegiance to the East Godavari district unit of the AP Village Servants' Association, held a protest demonstration in front of the MRO's office and later staged a `rasta roko' at the Collectorate on Thursday in support of their demands. Their demands include payment of Rs. 3,000 as minimum wages, enhancement of DA from Rs. 25 to R. 50 and promotion avenues for those qualified.

Later they submitted a memorandum to the DRO. -Correspondent

Kakinada: A group of NSS volunteers of Andhra University PG centre campus here during their 10-day special camp at Pavara village of Samalkot mandal laid a gravel road. The significance of the road is that it provides access to the crematorium near-by. -Correspondent

Dalits stage protest

Kakinada: Several dalits, including women owing allegiance to the district committee against caste discrimination and SC welfare association, staged a protest demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday demanding action against those responsible for alleged insult of dalits at the community lunch hosted in connection with Sriramanavami festival at Jagannaikulapalem village of Ramachandrapuram mandal. -Correspondent

Two killed in road accident

VIZIANAGARAM: O. Srinivasa Rao, 40, and B. Chakradhar, 25, of China Bogili village in Sitanagaram mandal were killed when an unidentified vehicle hit their two-wheeler at Maripivalasa on the NH-43 around 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

While Srinivasa Rao died on the spot, Chakradhar succumbed to injuries at Parvathipuram area hospital, according to the police. - Correspondent

DIETCET forms on sale

VIZIANAGARAM: Applications for DIETCET-2007 are being sold sale at e-Seva centres at Vizianagaram, Bobbili, Pavathipuram and Salur and also at main post-offices at Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram and Bobbili. The filled in applications must be submitted in person at DIET, Venugopalapuram, Vizianagaram by April 24. Students, who appeared for senior Intermediate examination, are also eligible for the examination.

Awareness programme

Kakinada: DRDA Project Director Ch. Kumaraswamy has advised the entrepreneurs to go for self-employment after fully studying the technical feasibility of the small-scale units instead of getting guided by subsidy and marginal money considerations. He was participating in the entrepreneurial awareness programme organised here on Thursday.
