BERHAMPUR: A man has approached the Berhampur women's police station seeking action against his wife and in-laws who are allegedly torturing him. Srikant Dash , a resident of Durgamadhavpur village, works as an accountant in Surat. In 2004, he married Mamata Panda, daughter of Bijay Panda of Gandhi Nagar area of the city. Mr. Srikant alleged that seven days after the marriage his wife went back to her parents and never returned. In 2006 she allegedly married another person without obtaining a divorce legally, he alleged.
In 2005, with the mediation of the police, the girl's family could get back all the items allegedly given as dowry from Mr. Srikant. He alleged that his in-laws were putting pressure on him to cough up huge money. Officer in-charge of the police station Bidyutlata Nayak said investigations confirmed that Mamata married for the second time without taking divorce, which was illegal. Investigation was on with regard to threat and extortion charges made by Mr. Srikant.
