The Asian American Federation of New York has chosen Arvind Raghunathan, Managing Director and Head of Global Arbitrage at Deutsche Bank, for its 2007 award.
He is one of the four Asian Americans who will be honoured at the federation's gala in May for "a direct, substantive contribution" to society.
Dr. Raghunathan, whose family is from Chennai, obtained his degree in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and later his Ph.D in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. Starting as an academic at New York University and at the University of California at Davis, where he did fundamental research on computing, Dr. Raghunathan moved to banking and joined Deutsche Bank in 1995. There he co-founded a group, Equity Arbitrage. He has been named one of the world's top traders several times by industry publications. Dr. Raghunathan is on the board of several non-profit organisations and has been active in establishing centres for South Asian studies at several universities across the U.S. He has also led fund-raising for Sankara Nethralaya in the U.S. and is an active fund-raiser for the Democratic Party and recently hosted a fund-raising dinner for Senator Hillary Clinton.
