New sewage cess opposed

Apartment residents say HMWSSB decision is unreasonable

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Associations of Colonies and Apartments has demanded that the HMWSSB authorities keep in abeyance the new sewerage cess for flat owners introduced in January. The minimum tariff was put at Rs. 125 per month per flat.

"The new cess is unjustifiable and has been thrust on flat residents without taking them into confidence. There has been a massive increase in the charges after introduction of the cess," the federation general secretary Kamesh Babu V. said in a statement here on Thursday.

"While apartments received the same volume of supply with the same pressure, why single out apartments residents and burden them with an enormous hike in tariff?" he asked The water board, he said, had no right to make an upward revision in tariff when several areas in the twin cities and surrounding municipalities were plagued by poor supplies - some areas receive water once in five days. Its archaic distribution network was crumbling all over. He wanted the HWMSSB authorities to organise a meeting with representatives of various apartment associations to sort out the issue and continue the old tariff till then.
