Bangalore: For Shashirekha the Rs. 3 lakh she got as insurance claim after her husband's untimely death may give little solace but for a family struggling to make ends meet, the money will certainly help.

Her husband, Mohan, a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) driver, died of brain tumour seven months ago. Shashirekha has never gone to school but both her daughters are studying — one in X standard and another in IV standard. She was one of the many who were presented insurance claim cheques at a function organised by the BMTC here on Thursday.

"I have requested the BMTC to give me a job but I have been told that since I am not educated, they will give my daughter a job. But I want my children to study further," she said.

Mohan's mother Puttarattnamma said he was the youngest of her 10 children. "Now, I have only four children alive," she said.

Job-seekers

Another survivor, Sudhamani, said she had applied for a job with BMTC and was hopeful that she would be given employment according to her educational qualification so that she could support her two children aged two and four. Her husband was a driver and died of heart attack during the course of his work. Claim cheques were disbursed to 26 dependants of the dead employees on Thursday and were presented by Minister for Transport N. Cheluvaraya Swamy.

"This amount is little consolation to the bereaved families considering the huge loss for them. But it will help them in a small way," he said.
