Only 40 commercial establishments targeted on Thursday

NEW DELHI: The sealing drive in the Capital being carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on orders of the Supreme Court failed to gather any momentum on Thursday as the squads targeted only 40 illegal commercial establishments during the day.

The sealing exercise, carried out amid heavy police and paramilitary force personnel deployment, remained peaceful.

The drive was carried out in three civic zones. Since the exercise was resumed on Wednesday, the MCD has sealed over 100 unauthorised commercial establishments on roads falling under the mixed land use category. The shops that were sealed included those of readymade garments, restaurants, and computer and multimedia accessories stores.

In Civil Lines Zone, 22 illegal shops were sealed on the main road in Gopalpur village, while in South Zone, the drive was carried out in two different localities -- Krishna Nagar where nine establishments were sealed and on the road between Saket PVR and Mandir Marg where just one property was targeted.

At Nizamuddin in City Zone, where the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee members personally monitored the drive, nine properties, including a Bharat Scouts and Guides property being misused for commercial purpose, were sealed.

Later in the evening, the Monitoring Committee members held a meeting with senior MCD officials and discussed the ongoing drive. Sources said the Monitoring Committee members directed the MCD officials to step up the drive and target more zones and areas.
