NEW DELHI: The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has given the green signal to Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) for taking up five new major natural gas pipeline projects with a total investment of Rs. 18,000 crore in the next five years.
Expression of Interest
Announcing this at a press conference here on Friday, GAIL Chairman U. D. Chowbey said the new projects approved for which Expression of Interest (EoI) would be issued on Saturday include Dadri-Bawana-Nangal pipeline; Chainsa-Gurgaon-Jhajjhar-Hissar pipeline; Jagdishpur-Haldia pipeline; Dhabol-Bangalore pipeline and Kochi-Kanjirkkod-Bangalore pipeline. The total length of the pipelines is around 3,300 km. In addition, Mr. Chowbey said GAIL would be laying three pipelines to augment the capacities of Dahej-Vijaipur pipeline (610 km); Vijaipur-Dadri pipeline (505 km) and Vijaipur-Auraiya-Jagdishpur pipeline (571 km). The carrying capacity of these pipelines would be 74 million standard cubic metre per day (mscmd) of gas. The total length of these pipelines with the three capacity augmentation lines would come to around 5,000 km. The new initiatives were expected to further strengthen the GAIL's position as a major gas transmission company and add to the existing network of 5,600 km. These pipelines would be built by GAIL on a ownership basis and were expected to be completed in two phases till 2011-12. The total natural gas carrying capacity of GAIL would increase to 280 mscmd from the present 140 mscmd
