Steps sought to get Supreme Court order on OBC quota rescinded

AICC General Secretary foresees serious backlash

Puducherry: All India Congress Committee General Secretary V. Narayanasamy M.P. has stressed that a meeting of both Houses of Parliament should be convened to discuss the situation arising out of the Supreme Court order on OBC quota. The meeting should chalk out steps to have the order rescinded.

Calling upon all sections of people to respond overwhelmingly to the bandh scheduled for Saturday, Mr. Narayanasamy said in a release on Friday that the apex court order would impact large chunk of Backward Classes and lead to a serious backlash.

Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader M. Ramadoss said that the order was unfortunate. The law framed by Parliament to eradicate ills of the Other Backward Classes was a historic document. The court order was causing concern to all those championing social justice. Mr. Ramadoss suggested that the Centre could bring out an ordinance to remove the hurdles caused by the order. He appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan and chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi to convene an immediate meeting of the Union Cabinet. President of the New Justice Party S .Ponnurangam said in a release that his party would respond to the call for bandh. Leaders belonging to the organisation for the welfare of fishermen, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, People's Union of Civil Rights and representatives of non-governmental organisations have expressed shock over the apex court order.

Addressing mediapersons here former legislator M. Ilango said that the suggestion of former Prime Minister V.P. Singh to have a referendum on the issue was most welcome.

Secretary of the People's Union of Civil Rights K. Sukumaran said that there should be remedial measures to protect the OBC candidates. President of the Lok Jansakthi Party here C. M. Puratchivendhan said on Friday that the order was most shocking.
