Puducherry: A joint meeting of leaders of various political parties, affiliated to the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), here on Friday have called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh in the Union Territory on Saturday to protest against the Supreme Court order staying the implementation of the 27 per cent quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in elite educational institutions. The meeting, which was chaired by the convener of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam here R.V. Janakiraman, was held in a marriage hall. The general secretary of the ruling Congress A. Gandhiraj, legislators of the DMK, Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader M. Ramadoss and PMK State Committee convener N.G. Panneerselvam, Communist Party India State committee secretary N. Kalainathan, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader T. Murugan, leader of the Dalit Panthers of India Paavanan, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) secretary S. Balasubramanian, Indian Union Muslim league leader Abdul Kader and Dravidar Kazhagam leader V.S. Sambandam were among those who participated. The meeting adopted resolutions expressing the parties' shock over the court order on Thursday staying the implementation of the quota. One of the resolutions said that the order had rejected the privileges of Parliament and caused a setback to social justice. The leaders appealed to all sections of fleet operators, students, merchants, transport owners, theatre owners, industrial workers and others to extend full cooperation for the successful conduct of the bandh.
