HYDERABAD: "Either you are aggressive or you have no chance," Stefanie Voegeles said of her victory over Liu Wan Ting 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the $10,000 ITF women's circuit tennis semifinals at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh Complex here on Friday. There were mistakes galore in the first set, she said. To contain the damage, the 17-year-old tidied up her act with some percentage tennis and then reverted to her naturally aggressive game and marched into the final after a nearly two-hour tussle. It took Voegeles a while to find her game and then push herself, observed her personal coach Ivo Werner. A finalist at Mumbai last week, Voegeles had won a $10,000 event in Tel Aviv last year, besides making the finals of two $5,000 competitions.
On court one, broken in the first game of each set, Sanaa Bhambri made little headway against Amber Liu. Even to hold serve seemed an uphill task for Sanaa, as the wiry American's onslaught was sustained. That Liu forced the pace and the direction of the contest was evident from the tremendous variation in her returns that either drove Sanaa backwards or on a scramble along the baseline.
The results: Singles: Semifinals: Amber Liu (U.S.) bt Sanaa Bhambri (Ind) 6-2, 6-1; Stefanie Voegeles (Sui) bt Liu Wan-Ting (Chn) 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Doubles: Final: Yi Chen (Tpe)/ Liu Wan-Ting (Chn) bt Jeong-A Cho/ Ji-Young Kim (Kor) 6-4, 6-1.
