External debt at $142.7 b in 2006

NEW DELHI: Owing to the sharp increase in corporate borrowings abroad coupled with a surge in deposits by non-resident Indians (NRIs), the country's external debt soared by $6.2 billion to $142.7 billion at the end of December last year. India's total debt jumped from $136.5 billion (Rs. 6,27,112 crore) at the end of September 2006 to $142.7 billion (Rs. 6,32,051 crore) as on December 31, 2006, according to the RBI.
