Unfortunate, says Mayawati

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW : Bahujan Samaj Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday termed "unfortunate" the Supreme Court order staying 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes in higher education institutions.

The court should have allowed reservation on the basis of the 1931 census until the next exercise in 2011. The 1931 caste census figures were the basis for 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in government jobs, she told a press conference here.

The court should not have stayed the reservation decision taken by Parliament.

Alleging that the Congress was never serious on the issue of reservation, she said if it was earnest about the 27 per cent quota for the OBCs, their current population figures ought to have been incorporated in the law. Ms. Mayawati assured the OBCs that the BSP would raise the issue in Parliament.

Her party also favoured a separate quota for the poor among the upper castes, Muslims and other religious minorities. It would support the UPA Government if it were to initiate any such move.
