KOLKATA: Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Partha Chatterjee on Friday threatened a movement against Tata Motors in the wake of "provocative" remarks by Ravi Kant, managing director of the company. Referring to the setting up of the company's automobile plant at Singur, Mr. Kant reportedly said here on Thursday that it was his company's prerogative to set up a plant where it chose and none had the right to question the location. Such remarks will "have dangerous consequences," Mr. Chatterjee said and demanded that "they be immediately withdrawn." "We are not against industry but will oppose any acquisition of agricultural land for the purpose of setting up industry." He warned of "an appropriate movement" against Tata Motors in West Bengal. Industries Minister Nirupam Sen "strongly objected" to the Trinamool leader's remarks. "It is unimaginable that such irresponsible remarks can come from a responsible leader," he said. It reflected the Trinamool's determination to thwart the State's industrial drive. Such remarks "will send the wrong signals" to prospective investors in the State.
