Kolkata: The West Bengal Government's attempts to restore normality at Nandigram in the State's Purbo Medinipur district where 14 persons were killed in the police firing and subsequent violence on March 14 seem to be finally bearing fruit with the possibility of an all-party meeting to facilitate the return of peace in the strife-torn area brightening. The all-party meeting is likely to be held on April 2, the State's Home Secretary, Prasad Ranjan Roy, said here on Friday after the situation at Nandigram was reviewed at a meeting of senior State and police officials convened by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Large parts of the Nandigram area spanning five gram panchayats continue to remain inaccessible to the police. Even though there have been some attempts at restoring communication links to some of these areas tension continues to prevail. Hundreds of families who had been driven out for allegedly not supporting the campaign against the setting up of industry there have been unable to return to their homes. Attempts to hold all-party meetings at Nandigram prior to the violence there on March 14 had proven unsuccessful. In most cases representatives of the Trinamool Congress-led Bhoomi Ucched Pratirodh Committee spearheading the movement against setting up industry there had failed to turn up, putting paid to hopes of a political settlement to the impasse there.
