Lara slams Roberts

Special Correspondent

St. Peter's: West Indies captain Brian Lara slammed selector Andy Roberts for criticising the selection of the eleven for the Super Eight match against New Zealand here on Thursday.

Roberts had reportedly told local journalists that the eleven that took the field against New Zealand — batsman Lendl Simmons for bowler Jerome Taylor — was baffling.

Asked to respond, Lara said, "I can say to Andy Roberts that I did not select this World Cup squad. I was not there in the meeting. The team was selected without me. But I still go out there and fight my very best with the squad given to me."

Best possible eleven

Lara added that the eleven picked was the "best possible", and that the lack of an additional bowler wasn't an issue in the match. "We could have had ten bowlers, and we won't have defended 177."

This isn't the first instance of Lara and the selectors disagreeing. After the fourth Test against India last year, Lara had told a packed press conference that he wasn't given the side he wanted. He was later forced to apologise to the West Indies Cricket Board for his comments.

The West Indies can ill-afford dissenting voices within the set-up at such a crucial stage of the biggest one-day tournament.
