NEW DELHI:
The Government on Friday announced that all political parties would be consulted at the earliest on the situation arising out of the Supreme Court's stay on implementation of 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in central higher education institutions.
Though a date for the all-party meeting suggested by the UPA Core Committee earlier in the evening has not been fixed, indications are that it will be convened soon after the summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation due to be held in Delhi on April 3 and 4.
Legal options
In its first official statement after the court's interim order, the Central Government reiterated its resolve to ensure that there was no compromise on the United Progressive Alliance's commitment to social justice.
Referring to the unanimity in Parliament over OBC reservation in higher education, the statement said all available legal options were being weighed.
The Core Committee, which met at the Prime Minister's residence, suggested that all parties be consulted before a final decision was taken on the course of action.
