Bangalore: The best of the 12th Century Vachana literature is now just a click away. The Department of Kannada and Culture on Thursday launched a website, www.vachanasahitya.org, that offers 21,674 vachanas of 249 vachanakaras online. Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, who inaugurated the website, said the department had initiated the project to make the vachanas available online in English translation. I.M. Vittala Murthy, Secretary, Department of Kannada and Culture, said 1,000 vachanas had been set to music and uploaded on the site. C. Srinivasa Raju, Kannada scholar, stressed the need to make available valuable literature from the past through easily accessible modern tools. A day would come, he hoped, when children would have the option of watching cartoons in Kannada. The survival of a language depended on the extent to which children could relate to it, Mr. Raju said. A set of CDs and cassettes of Dasa literature from the 15th Century was released at the function.
