Six MLAs declare assets, liabilities

Staff Reporter

The Lokayukta had threatened to file criminal cases against them

  • D.K. Shivakumar has sought time to file `missing' details
  • An MLA blamed his secretary for the lapse

BANGALORE: Following an ultimatum by Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde, Congress leader and former Minister D.K. Shivakumar and five other MLAs on Thursday declared their assets and liabilities for 2005.

The Lokayukta had given them two days to file the information which they ought to have filed by June 2006. Mr. Hegde had stated that if they failed to do so he would proceed to file criminal cases under Section 176 of the Indian Penal Code.

Apart from Mr. Shivakumar, the Lokayukta had decided to invoke the provisions of the section against Mahadeva, Muniyappa Muddappa B., Shivashankarappa T.H., Sudhakar D. and Venkatesh K.

Mr. Shivakumar came to the Lokayukta office and filed Form No. 4 pertaining to the statement of assets and liabilities. When the Lokayukta officials pointed to some missing documents, including details of assets and liabilities of his wife, Mr. Shivakumar sought some time to comply.

When asked about reason for default, another legislator was quoted by an official as having said he had given the declaration to his secretary. But only when his name appeared in the list of defaulters in newspapers two days ago he found that his secretary had not filed it.

The Lokayukta officials said the declarations filed by the six legislators were incomplete and they had been asked to submit additional documents.
