"HOUSES IN THE HIMALAYAS": Painting by Ramakrishna Behera

NEW DELHI: Ramakrishna Behera's collection of paintings titled "Curvature" on display at the All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society here is a reflection of the life around, be it scenes from the playfield, facets of nature or even images from everyday life.

"Few of these paintings are from my imagination, otherwise they are inspired by my friends, the society we live in and also by nature," says Behera, an IIT Roorkee graduate and a self-taught artist.

Behera's passion for books and soccer is reflected well in his paintings.

An oil-on-canvas painting depicts players in action on the football field, while another shows a simple book kept open on the bed.

Nature has a significant presence in Behera's paintings. Be it the potato garden on the way to Dalhousie, the yellow flowers in Mr. Gangid's garden or even a rubber plantation, everything finds an expression in colours through the artist's brush.

Also on view are a few of his oil-on-canvas and watercolour-based landscape paintings. The houses on the hilly slopes of Shimla, Khajjiar with their winding roads and greenery and even the Tehri dam manage to capture Behera's fancy.

His interest in cosmology also manages to a make a subtle presence in many of his works.

Behera, apart from being a self-taught artist based in Mathura, is also an employee of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited posted at Mathura Refinery.

He has also exhibited his paintings at Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi.
