Woman killed

KADAPA: A 50-year-old woman Zahira Bi was killed when a tractor hit the autorickshaw in which she was travelling at Koti Reddy circle here on Friday. Her head was crushed and she died instantly. The auto driver was injured. Her body was sent to RIMS hospital . Kadapa Traffic Circle Inspector Mahabub Peera registered a case. In another incident, a tractor driver, Venkata Reddy (30) was crushed to death when the vehicle overturned near Uppalapadu village in Jammalamadugu on Thursday night. -Staff Reporter

Seven injured

KADAPA: A woman was severely injured and six others sustained injuries when an autorickshaw overturned near Cheruvukindapalle village in Rayachoti mandal on Friday. Ramiza Begum, the woman, was rushed to Ruia hospital at Tirupati and other injured were admitted to Rayachoti Government hospital. Rayachoti police registered a case. -Staff Reporter

OBCs quota

TIRUPATI: The reported orders of the Supreme Court temporarily suspending the implementation of OBCs quota was described as "unfortunate" by General Secretary of the Electricity Backward Classes Employees Welfare Association, APSPDC, L. Chalapathi. In a signed statement here, he said the orders affected the morale of 2,500 castes enumerated as BCs in the country and was against the guarantee provided by the constitution to ensure a 25% reservation to the BCs who according to the Mandal Commission report constituted 56% of the population in the country. -Special Correspondent

Sex racket busted; four persons held

KURNOOL: The rural police busted a sex racket in the city on Thursday and arrested two persons. A case was registered against four persons involved in trafficking of women. According to reports, a gang brought women from Ongole and sold them to brothels here. A girl was taken into safe custody and was handed over to the Women and Child Welfare Department. -Special Correspondent

Two hurt

ANANTAPUR: Two persons were injured when supporters of the Congress and the TDP clashed at Kogira village of Roddam mandal in the district on Thursday.

According to the police, the injured were admitted to Government hospital at Penukonda.

The Congress and the TDP led groups are at loggerheads for long in the village. - Staff Reporter

Ganja seized

KADAPA: The Duvvur police seized 104 kg of ganja worth of Rs. 3 lakhs being clandestinely transported in a car from Warangal district, during vehicle checking near Duvvur police station on Friday. -Staff Reporter

One-year RI for former official

Hyderabad: A special court has sentenced former Divisional Accounts Officer of Rural Water Supply wing Ch. Venkateswara Rao to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case. He was trapped by the Anti-Corruption Bureau officials six years ago when he received Rs. 1,000 bribe from a person while working at Hanamkonda.

Power cut imposed

WARANGAL: The Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (APNPDCL) has decided to impose a two-hour power cut during the daytime in all mandals, towns and district headquarters .

Health insurance scheme

MAHABUBNAGAR: Chief minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy will launch a new health insurance scheme -- Arogya Sri - at Mahabubnagar on Saturday.

According to officials, the Chief Minister will will inaugurate Suryateja power project at Beechpally. He will inaugurate a cluster of houses constructed under Rajiv Housing programme at Mahabubnagar town . Later, he will inaugurate a mega medical camp at stadium grounds.

Chief Minister greets Jain community

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has greeted members of the Jain community in the State on the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanti on Saturday.

In a message, he described Bhagwan Mahaveer as an embodiment of peace, non-violence and tolerance and said his preaching was relevant even today. - Special Correspondent

Probe into cattle deaths welcomed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Sheep and Goat Rearers' Association has appealed to the high-power scientific committee appointed by the Centre to go into the death of over 10,000 cattle in the State in the last three years after chewing BT cotton leaves.

P. Jamalaiah, general secretary, welcomed the setting of the committee and wanted it to ascertain the truth. - Special Correspondent

MP's car knocks down two Transco linemen

KADAPA: Two Transco linemen were killed and two of their colleagues severely injured when the car of Rajya Sabha member and district TDP president C. Ramachandraiah hit a motorcycle near Utukur in Rajampet mandal late on Thursday night. The MP was unhurt. The victims were identified as Bandi Ramaiah (45) and T. Sudhakar (37) and the injured Chandra Reddy and Lakshmi Reddy. The car driver was taken into custody. - Staff Reporter

Nod for regional Greyhounds unit

KURNOOL: Decks have been cleared for setting up of regional unit of Greyhounds force at Laxmipuram on the outskirts of Kurnool. The Cabinet cleared the proposal and allotted 246 acres to the unit. About 500 troops would be stationed permanently at the station. The site, located in the Jagannatha hill range, would be a perfect place for training of troops in the jungle warfare. - Special Correspondent

Train rams into herd, 14 cattle perish

ADILABAD: Some 14 cattle were killed on Friday after the Mumbai-Nagpur-Mumbai Nandigram expressed rammed into a herd near Talamadugu railway station, about 15 km from here. According to information the train coming towards Adilabad station at about 9.45 a.m. rammed into a herd of 20 buffaloes and cows crossing the track. - Staff Reporter

Home guard injured as Maoists fire at him

ONGOLE: A home guard Raju was grievously hurt when Maoists shot at him at Yenuguladinnepadu in Pedaraveedu mandal of Prakasam districton Friday. He was rushed to a super speciality hospital at Guntur where he is recovering.

According to the police, Raju (17), who was working as home guard at Dornala, went to Yenuguladinnepadu village on some personal work. Three armed Maoists encountered him in the village and shot him from close range. - Special Correspondent

Three persons electrocuted

GUNTUR: Three persons died in the wee hours of Friday when they came in contact with a live electric wire in the fields of Nudurupadu in Phirangipuram mandal of Guntur district. The police were unable to identify the victims and presume them to be labourers from Kurnool district. The shirt of a 35-year-old male bore the tag `Surya Tailor' at Tadipatri Road near Gooty. The other two were a woman aged around 28 and an infant below one year. - Staff Reporter
