Election of House panels notified

NEW DELHI: On the orders of Speaker Prem Singh, the Delhi Assembly on Friday notified the election of three Financial House Committees for 2007-08.

The Speaker said Vijay Singh Lochav had been elected Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Anil Bhardwaj of the Committee on Government Undertakings, and Anjali Rai of the Estimates Committee.

All members of the three committees were also elected unopposed. Incidentally, the election programme for the constitution of these panels had been announced in the House by the Speaker on March 21 and Friday was the last date for elections

Funds for Metro

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has received an additional fiscal boost with the Government of Japan announcing that it would extend its soft loan package to India.

According to the agreement, DMRC stands to gain Rs. 508 crore for the financial year 2006-07 for its work on Phase II comprising five lines extending to a total of 54 km. The second phase is expected to cater to 2.59 million passengers daily.

Farewell function

NEW DELHI: The Ayyappa Sewa Samithi at R.K.Puram here is organising a farewell function at its temple premises on Saturday to honour the chief priest (Melshanti) of this Mahakshetra, Brahmashri Pallakulam Thrivikraman Nampoothiripad, who is retiring from service on March 31 after 33 years of dedicated service to Lord Ayyappa.

The Samithi will also honour his wife at the function that is expected to be attended by several distinguished personalities.

Award ceremony

NEW DELHI: A seminar is being organised by Sarvartha Samkshema Samithi at Andra Pradesh Bhavan here on Saturday. Lifetime achievement awards will be conferred on Indian Council for Cultural Relations president Karan Singh, Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande and former Election Commissioner G.V.G. Krishnamurthy at the function in memory of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.

Sentenced

NEW DELHI: Two persons with the same name on Friday faced the ire of a Delhi court although being on opposite sides of a criminal case. Jai Narayan, a suspended Junior Engineer of Jal Board , was sentenced to three-and-half years' imprisonment for accepting bribe from another Jai Narayan, who, during the trial turned hostile and was also slapped with a criminal case for deposing falsely.
