Lorry stir from today

Staff Reporter

KOCHI : Goods carriers in the State will go on an indefinite strike from Saturday in protest against the State Government's decision to make speed governors mandatory from April 15.

President of the Kerala State Lorry Owners Federation P.M. Mohammed Ali said Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas convened a meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday evening to discuss the issue. If the Government persisted with its decision, vehicles not fitted with speed governors would not be able to pay vehicle tax.

Kerala being a consumerist State, a major share of vehicles running here were from other States, where speed governor was not mandatory. Thus, vehicles registered in Kerala would be in a disadvantageous position. This was a clear case of discrimination, he said.

PTI writes from Namakkal: Lorry owners of Tamil Nadu have decided to stop plying to destinations in Kerala, expressing solidarity with their counterparts in that State who have been asked by the administration to fix speed governors on their vehicles.

The lorry owners in Kerala have been up in arms against the State Government which had asked them to fix the governors.

Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners' Association president P. Senguttavan told mediapersons here on Friday that vehicles carrying commodities to the neighbouring State would not ply from 10 p.m. on Friday till further instructions were received from their Kerala counterparts.
