NEW DELHI: In a crackdown on smuggling of illicit liquor in view of the forthcoming MCD elections, the Delhi police have arrested at least 18 alleged bootleggers in different parts of the city in the past couple of days. The Crime Branch arrested Bablir Singh at Model Town on Thursday when he was allegedly trying to smuggle in 25 cartons containing liquor bottles meant for sale only in Haryana in his Maruti Esteem car. During interrogation, he purportedly disclosed that he was a contractor for electrical goods. In another operation, the Crime Branch arrested Satish at Tilak Nagar when he was carrying 25 cartons of liquor bottles meant for sale only in Haryana. According to the police, Satish was previously involved in four cases under the Excise Act. Thirty-year-old Sarita, against whom three cases were previously registered on charges of bootlegging, was arrested after the police recovered 12 cartons of country-made liquor from her Uttar Nagar house on Thursday. The South Delhi police arrested a Blueline bus owner, Surender, and two more persons, Ramesh Paswan and Bharat, after over 70 cartons containing illicit liquor were recovered from the bus at Badarpur on Thursday. Another person, Prakash, was arrested with 27 cartons of illicit liquor. Three more persons, Umesh, Rajesh and Mahender Pal, were arrested at Mehrauli. Riaz Ahmed, Mukesh, Santosh, Bhopal, Ramgopal and Asha were arrested in different parts of North-East Delhi. Two other accused, Sharda and Moti Lal, were arrested at Sarai Rohilla and Roop Nagar, respectively.
