Is that a sun shade — or a TV screen?

NOVEL USE: Car visor doubles as a TV screen in design by a Chennai firm.

Chennai: An Indian product development company has created a novel application for cars — turning the sun shield or driver's visor into a television screen. Undertaking the work for its China-based client, U-Eyes Media Technologies, engineers at the California Software Company (CalSoft) of Chennai, have produced a sun shield that doubles as a Flash-player. While the passengers in the car can watch a film or a music video, there is scope for flashing advertisements as well.

This not only cheers up the bored travellers but also catches his or her attention if there's anything interesting happening.

U-Eyes plans to deploy the Smart Mobile Visor-TV in taxi cabs plying in China... and is toying with the idea of putting it in golf carts as well.

Saving on junk prints

CalSoft has also come out with a simple solution to a common problem: wastage of paper and ink when one takes printouts of Web pages. For its U.S.-based customer GreenPrint Technologies, it has developed a tool that eliminates this problem. The software, called GreenPrint, automatically detects and removes unnecessary pages from one's printouts.

When installed, GreenPrint inserts itself between the user's Web browser and the connected printer. It takes the form of a ``faux'' printer, analyses the document, identifies and eliminates wasted pages, and hands over the trimmed document to the actual printer.

The product also has features such as saving of any web page as a PDF file.

It also shows a detailed preview of a web page, or any other document one is printing and allows to manually eliminate pages from the printout.

GreenPrint costs $35 but free trial downloads are available at *www.printgreener.com.*
