Sharath Kamal clinches title

KOLKATA : Top-seeded Sharath Kamal of PSPB won the men's singles crown in the YMCA National ranking prize money table tennis tournament here on Saturday.

In the final, Sharath got past his colleague Subhajit Saha, who conceded the match after losing the first game and trailing the second 3-6.

Saha complained of pain in his left knee before he limped off midway in the second game.

The clash for the men's title brought together the two best players in the country but Sharath, who broke into the top-100 in the world ranking this month, proved his supremacy yet again after having beaten Saha for the National crown earlier in the month.

Sharath progressed to the title round, beating Anirban Nandi of RSPB in straight games in the semifinals held in the morning.

Saha beat another Railway player, Sayan Pal Chowdhury, to book a final berth.

Fifth-seeded Susmita Roy of PSPB won the women's title without having to sweat much against her colleague Nandita Saha.

Roy, a two-time National junior champion, had caused a major upset, beating second- seeded Mouma Das in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Nandita moved into the final getting a walk-over from fourth-seeded Mousumi Pal (ONGC). But Saha, who had caused the biggest upset beating the top-seeded Poulomi Ghatak in straight games in the quarterfinals, could not continue her giant killing run as Roy produced a technically sound game to win the final 4-1.

Men: (final): Sharath Kamal (PSPB) bt Subhajit Saha (PSPB) 11-8, 6-3 (concd); Semifinals: S. Kamal bt Anirban Nandy (RSPB) 11-9, 11-8, 13-11, 11-8; S. Saha bt Sayan Pal Roy (RSPB) 11-6, 13-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-7.

Women's (final): Susmita Roy (PSPB) bt Nandita Saha (PSPB) 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9. N. Saha bt Mousumi Pal (ONGC) walk-over; S. Roy bt Mouma Das (PSPB) 7-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-6, 11-7.

Boys' (final): Soumyajit Ghosh (N. Ben) bt Sourav Saha (PSPB) 11-9, 13-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7.

Girls' (final): Ankita Das (N. Ben) bt Medha Moirta (N. Ben) 11-4, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9.
