IN FULL FLOW: Stefanie Voegele, who won the title, in action.
HYDERABAD: When the errors crept in, Stefanie Voegele berated herself for those spilt points. Not one to let them hamper her cause, they only steeled the 17-year-old's resolve. Down by a set, she clambered back to lift the singles crown in the $10,000 ITF women's circuit tennis tournament here on Saturday. In the final, she subdued American Amber Liu 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. It took a while for Voegele to regain her rhythm and her winning ways, the lost opening set notwithstanding. Fewer first serves in, found her dropping serve in games five and 11. A short wave of the racquet behind her back before the ball-toss, besides proving ominous for Liu, disguised the kick and sliced serves well. Before long, the down-the-line returns off both hands were destructive. One such stunning riposte bordered on the belligerent.
Breaks
Voegele broke Liu in the second, sixth and 12th games of the second set. In the decider, the Swiss teenager dropped serve in the opening game, but recouped well to break her rival in the second and eighth. Liu appeared superior tactically, but seemed to tire faster than her opponent in the searing heat.
The result: Final: Stefanie Voegele (Sui) bt Amber Liu (USA) 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
