Russian film fest to mark diplomatic ties

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: To mark the 60th anniversary of Indo-Russian diplomatic relations, an eight-day Russian Film Festival will open here in the Capital on Monday.

Organised by the Russian Federal Agency of Culture and Cinematography, Moscow, in association with the Russian Embassy in India and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC), the festival will be inaugurated by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi.

Eight-day fest

"The Island", "You Will Not Leave Me", "The Mother Wolf of Ves'egonsk" and "72 Meters" will be the films screened at Stein Auditorium of India Habitat Centre, while "Listener" and "Piter-FM" will be shown at RCSC on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

The first day's offering, Pavel Lugin's "The Island", is about a Russian soldier who is forced by the Nazis to shoot his captain before he himself is left in the lurch.

Rescued by monks, the soldier survives and becomes a holy man.

Alla Surikova's "You'll Not Leave Me" will be shown on Wednesday.

Here a young woman comes back from a health resort. One day, a card arrives for her from a man who has apparently spent time with her at the resort.

This card is received by her husband who writes back to the man pretending to be his wife.

On Friday, "The Mother Wolf Of Ves'egonsk" — that is about a mother wolf who desperately seeks revenge for the death of her cubs by a hunter — will be screened, while on April 9, "72 Meters", whose storyline is about a submarine wreck and is written by Alexander Pokrovsky, will be shown.
