Prisoner's death sparks tension

CUDDALORE: The death of a remand prisoner K. Chandrabalan (30) of Sirkazhi sparked tension in Cuddalore Central Prison on Saturday. After taking breakfast, Chandrabalan complained of uneasiness and was immediately taken to the Cuddalore Headquarters Government Hospital where he died.

On information, prison inmates abstained from taking lunch. There was a version that Chandrabalan's death occurred after he was severely beaten up by a warder. The prisoners demanded action against the warder.

The authorities said Chandrabalan was involved in arrack trade and was a drug abuser. He already had complaints such as epilepsy. The cause of the death would be known only after obtaining the medical report. The prisoners had urged Jail Superintendent P. Subramanian to ensure round-the-clock medical care in the prison. At present, a single doctor is attending to prisoners for minor ailments during daytime, and whenever warrants he makes a visit to the prison during night.

Meanwhile, it was detected that certain prisoners had started cooking food with utensils and essential commodities sneaked in through some sources.

The Jail Superintendent had informed them that it was against the jail rules, and they ought to take only the food served by the jail authorities.

All the vessels had now been seized. Similarly, the authorities had cleared the jail premises of SIM cards and cellphones.
