Senate moves against Registrar

Staff Reporter

  • Syndicate voices its lack of confidence in Registrar
  • Syndicate is imaking ground for political vendetta: Dr. Mohammed

TENHIPALAM: Calicut University administration seems to be heading for a showdown with the Senate, which met on the campus on Friday, authorising the Syndicate to initiate action against Registrar P.P. Mohammed.

The Registrar on Saturday appeared defiant.

Syndicate members said here that they would soon take Dr. Mohammed to task for failing to comply with certain decisions of the Syndicate. They said the Syndicate had voiced its lack of confidence in the Registrar.

The Senate move against the Registrar has come in the wake of a standoff between him and the nominated Syndicate. The Syndicate members accused the Registrar of delaying the implementation of various decisions taken by it. They said even starred items, which ought to be implemented with urgency, were delayed for long. They said the decision to give Rs.10,000 as a token of relief to the former research scholar Nirmala was not implemented on time. Dr. Mohammed, however, denied the allegations. The nominated Syndicate, he said, was making ground for political vendetta.

He said Nirmala, who died a few weeks ago, was the victim of the university's procedural errors. Dr. Mohammed said the Syndicate was trying to blame him for the actions of his predecessors.

"It seems that I am the only stumbling block for the partisan Syndicate members to implement their agenda," he said.

Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi, who chaired over the Senate session, said she did not wish to comment as she was "only partly informed about the issue."

She said she was trying to learn more about the issue.
