SALEM: More farmers should come forward to take up sericulture to increase the cocoon and raw silk production in the State, Sericulture Commissioner Harmander Singh has said. Addressing a workshop on Sericulture Sustainability and Entrepreneurship in Tamil Nadu organised by the Regional Sericulture Research Station (RSRS) and Department of Economics, Periyar University here recently, the Commissioner said that farmers could take up sericulture as an allied activity to improve their income. This would also help generate more employment opportunities in the rural areas. The Government was providing huge amount as subsidy to promote sericulture. He said the cooperative mode in sericulture by women self-help group members proved successful in some parts of the country.
