PALAKKAD: The Malampuzha Dam Protection Committee has demanded that the Government stop construction of an eight-km road by the Forest Department in the Malampuzha forest area.
Soil erosion
The road through the forest would destroy the ecological balance in the area and cause soil erosion into the Malampuzha Dam, committee secretary P.S. Panikkar said in a statement here on Saturday. An eight-km road from Kava to Pandarathumala is being constructed through the forest by the Forest Department. The undergrowth in the forest area is being cut down and burnt. Earth movers are also being used for laying the road. The statement alleged that the construction of the road was taken up without the sanction of the Union Environment and Forests Department. It was also against the Supreme Court order banning non-forestry works in the forest areas, the statement said.
