PALAKKAD: Minister for Electricity A.K. Balan has said that an amount of Rs.2.7 crore will be allotted to the district for taking up immediate drought relief measures. He was talking to mediapersons after a review meeting on the severe drought conditions in the district with officials and people's representatives here on Saturday. Mr. Balan said a sum of Rs.1.4 crore had been sanctioned for drought relief work in the district. The remaining amount would be released soon. He said the Rs.17-crore scheme prepared by the district administration to mitigate the situation would be taken up medium-and long-term projects. But the immediate schemes required Rs.2.27 crore to provide drinking water in the district. A Crisis Management Group would be constituted with the District Collector as its convenor to monitor the drought relief works. He said power connections would be given to drinking water projects without further delay and that there would be no disconnection of power for the next two months. Though power consumption in the State had increased by 8 million units a day and there was severe shortage for power, the Government would not impose power cut or load shedding in the State. N.N. Krishnadas, MP; C.P. Mohammed, K. Achuthan and V. Chenthamarakshan, MLAs; Subida Ishaq, district panchayat president; B. Suman, District Collector; and presidents of block and grama panchayats, attended the meeting.
