COLOMBO: At least one soldier of the Special Task Force was killed and two personnel were injured in fighting between the Sri Lanka military and the LTTE in the north and east even as the air force targeted yet another Tiger base on Saturday. A statement by the military said one STF personnel was killed and another injured when the vehicle in which travelled was targeted by a claymore mine by the Tigers on Saturday evening. The incident took place in Batticaloa district. Separately, two soldiers suffered serious injuries when an army vehicle was caught in a landmine explosion at Thavasipuram in Vavuniya. The incident took place when the vehicle was going to distribute lunch to soldiers on duty. Police, acting on information given by a civilian, found a claymore mine, bullets and a detonator cord from the Thambalagamuwa and Barathipuram areas in the morning. In a related development, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) launched an air strike at a "clearly identified Sea Tiger base" in Kadaikadu in the north of Chalai. Details of the incident were not available. The Defence Ministry web site re-produced an editorial in the English daily, Island expressing concern over the silence of the international community on the aerial strike launched by the Tigers at the main air base on the outskirts of Colombo last Monday. "It is strange that the world has apparently taken the LTTE's newly acquired air capability for granted. Apart from a few paper missiles fired at the outfit from some countries over the air raid, there are no signs of big nations being galvanised into assessing the latest threat to global peace.
