BERHAMPUR: Elected members of panchayat bodies from traditional fishermen community were advised to strive for the uplift of the community at a two-day workshop that concluded at Gopalpur on Saturday. The workshop was organised by United Artistes to mobilise elected members from the fishermen community. Resource persons at the workshop said that marine fishermen were prone to vagaries of nature, which is a major hindrance in their economic development. Director of `Udyam' Pradeep Mahapatra urged the elected members to take steps to bring in economic and social security to members of their community.
Government schemes
Ganjam district Collector Sanjay Singh said the government initiated several developmental schemes for the benefit of the fishermen community. It was the duty of panchayat members to see to it that the benefits reached the targeted people. The Project Director of DRDA also spoke. Secretary of United Artiste Mangaraj Panda and president of `Samudram' Chitamma opined that women leaders had a greater role to play, for they could be catalysts in the emancipation of women of their community.
