Villagers seek more security, stage demo

Staff Correspondent

Fear of attack by dacoits grips them

DHARWAD: Even as the police intensified investigation into the dacoity cases and have intensified patrolling, people in the rural areas of the district are in the grip of fear of attack by dacoits.

The people feel that the police department is not serious about safeguarding the life and property. People in rural areas on Friday staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner demanding additional security. Residents of Vanahalli village in Dharwad taluk, who staged the demonstration, urged the district administration to prevail upon the police to deploy armed police personnel in their village.

They said villagers were frightened to step out of their houses at night and were spending sleepless nights owing to the fear of possible attack by robbers. A youth from the village had sustained bullet injury in the neck and is undergoing treatment at the KIMS Hospital in Hubli. Police sources claim that the injury was due to accidental pulling of the trigger by one of the members of a group of youths of the village who were on patrolling duty.

However on Friday, the villagers contended that the injury was due to firing from robbers and demanded deployment of at least two armed police personnel in their village.
