HUBLI: Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) Shankar Bidari said on Saturday that police officials had been directed to register cases under Goonda (Prevention) Act against persons running matka and gambling dens. Mr. Bidari told presspersons here that the direction was in the wake of ban on lottery and arrack. On the vacant post of Superintendent of Police in Dharwad district, Mr. Bidari said the person who was shouldering the responsibility now was of the same cadre and there was no lapse with regard to security. He said if a comprehensive proposal on improving the traffic system in the twin cities was submitted by May end, Rs. 50 lakh would be released for the purpose. He said 10 members of a gang of robbers, including three women, had been arrested by the Dharwad police. They had admitted their involvement in six robbery cases in Dharwad and Gadag districts, he said. He gave the names of the arrested as Shivaraj Pawar Bhosle, Gujrat Gyanappa Pawar, Bharati Abirkhan Pawar, Ningamma Rajputrao Pawar, Mahadevi Shingareppa Bhosle (Kavalur, Koppal district), Naga Shankar Bhosle (Bellur, Koppal district), Sherkhan Tulasiram Bhosle (Bisnal, Koppal district), Khajavakil Davalsingh Pawar (Hatti, Koppal district) Ningajja of Kenchappa Bhosle (Kalkeri, Gadag district) and Shikhari Shiva Yashwant Shindhe (Basapur, Gadag district). A gang member, Patil Abirkhan Pawar, was caught by people of Mantur village in Hubli taluk. His arrest led to tracing of other members of the gang by a special squad led by Deputy Superintendents of Police N.G. Sanikoppa (Dharwad) and Papaiah (Gadag), he said. With the arrest of the gang members, six cases of robbery had been solved and efforts were on to solve other cases robbery. The police had recovered 40 gm of gold jewellery, Rs. 11,770, a mobile cellphone and some lethal weapons from the arrested.
