HYDERABAD: Power cut in villages is likely to be increased to a maximum of eight hours a day and in urban areas to six hours very soon following severe power shortage. In spite of a firm decision against imposing any power cut on major cities, load shedding has become inevitable in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Guntur, Warangal but has been avoided in Hyderabad. The likelihood of increasing the duration of power cut is due to the demand being poised to touch a record 200 million units a day following heavy agriculture load and increased demand from the domestic sector. As a result, the shortfall will rise to 15 million units a day forcing AP Transco and distribution companies to seek heavy load relief to prevent fall in grid frequency. At present, the shortage is around 10 mu a day. On March 24, the demand reached 185.25 mu, the highest for the season so far.
Summer challenge
Power utilities are bracing themselves to meet the summer challenge. While the Centre has not responded to the State's plea to give 250 MW additionally out of "unallocated share" of Central stations, Haryana, Tripura, West Bengal and Orissa have joined Punjab to help the State with about 250 MW. Clubbing this with help from other sources, Transco is frantically trying to avoid further trouble to consumers.
