Seven MLCs to set aside salary, perks

Staff Reporter

They will use salary and other benefits exclusively to take up social movements

NELLORE: Seven MLCs have decided to set aside their salary and other perks for taking up movements with a view to improving the living conditions of the farming community, downtrodden sections, salaried class, particularly employees under the unorganised sector and the middle class.

Announcing this at a press conference, the newly-elected MLC from the East Rayalaseema graduate constituency, V. Balasubrahmanyam, on Saturday said that seven MLCs -- M. V. S. Sarma, K. George Victor, K. Nageshwar, K. S. Laxmana Rao, Dachuri Rami Reddy and Chukka Ramaiah - will use money from their salary as well as other benefits exclusively to take up social movements.

Agenda unveiled

Outlining their agenda, the MLC, who has been an active member of the Jana Vignana Vedika and also of the UTF, said that they would strive for a representative democracy to achieve socio-economic and political justice for the common man.

With socio-economic development bypassing a significant segment of the population, the movement would make efforts to eradicate poverty as well as putting an end to exploitation of disadvantaged sections of society, he said.

Basic issues such as food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, unemployment, education and other pertinent issues would take centrestage, transcending partisan politics. "We have proved with our victories that educated people always vote for those people who have integrity and commitment towards inclusive democracy. We are therefore pretty sure of reaching people with our movement."

Taking a dig at former Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu for his statement that his party will abolish the Legislative Council if returned to power, the MLC said that his comment bordered on absurdity.
