No coaching classes in summer: ABVP

TIRUPATI: The ABVP on Saturday said that despite specific directions issued by the Board of Intermediate Education that corporate colleges should not conduct coaching classes in summer, some colleges were violating orders. SVUTA plea on retirement age

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University Teachers' Association on Saturday demanded that the retirement age of teachers working in universities in Andhra Pradesh be pegged at 65 on par with that of their counterparts working in the Central University. The association adopted a resolution to this effect at its meeting here. - Special Correspondent

KVPS cycle rallies

KADAPA: Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham will organise awareness cycle rallies in the State from April 5 to 14 against caste discrimination, CITU district president D. Syam said on Saturday. Village servants `petition' Gandhiji

KADAPA: Village servants `placed a memorandum' in the hands of Mahatma Gandhi statue here on Saturday, decrying the Government's adamant attitude in conceding their demands. They alleged that village servants lacked minimum wages and languished like bonded labour. - Staff Reporter

Municipal bill collectors arrested

HYDERABAD: Anti-Corruption Bureau officials on Saturday arrested two bill collectors of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, Ragula Bal Reddy and Katta Sanjeeva Reddy, on charge of possessing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. Searches at their houses and office revealed that each of them owned properties worth over Rs. 40 lakhs, a press release said. While Bal Reddy had 12 open plots, a three-floored building and five acres of agricultural land, Sanjeeva Reddy possessed eight open plots, two four-floored building and 13 acres of agricultural land.

They would be presented before a special court in Hyderabad. — Staff Reporter

Showroom opened

KARIMNAGAR: Prashanth Agarwal, Suzuki India representative, inaugurated the first-of-its kind Suzuki showroom in north Telangana in Karimnagar town on Saturday. Suzuki will be selling its latest brands of Zeus and Heat two-wheelers. He also handed over five new vehicles to customers. Besides, some 19 vehicles were booked on the first day. - Staff Reporter

Milad-un-Nabi greetings

HYDERABAD: Governor Rameshwar Thakur and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy have greeted Muslims in connection with Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, on April 1. In his message, the Governor said the message of the Prophet was more relevant than ever at a time when the world was torn by self-doubt and strife. Dr. Reddy hoped that the festival would strengthen the bonds of love, compassion and mutual understanding among people. — Special Correspondent

RTC daily wage hiked

HYDERABAD: APSRTC on Saturday enhanced the daily wage of casual drivers and conductors by Rs. 5. General secretary of the National Mazdoor Union, Sayed Mahmood said that the RTC management agreed to effect the hike from Sunday (April 1, 2007). The casual drivers pay would go up from Rs. 160 to Rs. 165 a day and that of casual conductors from Rs. 130 to Rs. 135. — Special Correspondent

Group-II exam results

HYDERABAD: The results of Group-II examination will be released on April 10, according to Y. Venkatarami Reddy, chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission here on Saturday. In all, 800 candidates will be called for interview for filling up 400 vacancies. — Special Correspondent

Student kidnapped

NANDYAL: A final year B. Tech student Sandhya was allegedly kidnapped at Nandyal on Saturday. She was abducted by a group of people, who came in a Tata Sumo, from State Bank Colony here. The police registered a case. — Special Correspondent

Cane crushing season extended

HYDERABAD: The Government has announced extension of crushing season for sugarcane by two months till June-end. This is to facilitate crushing of excess sugarcane grown this year in the State, with an offer of Rs 100 per tonne to sugar factories against the cane crushed. The extension followed an understanding achieved by the Government with the sugar factories after a series of meetings, Sugar Minister J. Geetha Reddy said at a press meet. — Special Correspondent

MoU signed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Finance Corporation (APSFC) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Ladies Organisation on Saturday entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to train, develop and finance first generation woman entrepreneurs. APSFC Managing Director Ajeya Kallam and Chairperson of State chapter of FICCI Ladies Organisation, Manjula Reddy, exchanged copies of the MoU, a press release said. — Special Correspondent

Plea to cut inflation

HYDERABAD: Sudhir Singh, president, Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, on Saturday urged the Government to take remedial fiscal measures to reduce inflation.

Referring to Reserve Bank of India's move to increase the Cash Reserve Ratio and REPO rate, he said it might force the banks to increase their lending rates thus increasing the cost of borrowings. . — Special Correspondent
