VAO suspended

ERODE: Following complaints from villagers, the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) of Ganapathypalayam near Gobichettipalayam has been suspended by the Tahsildar.

According to sources, Mohan, a VAO of Ennamangalam, was transferred and posted as Village Administrative Officer of Ganapathypalayam. But it is stated that he was not attending the office regularly. Irritated over his attitude, the villagers made several complaints against him. Meanwhile, Annamalai, a villager, complained that the VAO was delaying granting of identity card for him under the Social Security Scheme. The villagers condemning the attitude of the VAO gathered before the VAO office on Friday and laid a siege to it. The Gobichettipalayam Tahsildar, Muthiah, who reached the spot ordered the suspension of the official.

Three constables injured in accident

ERODE: In a major road accident on Friday midnight, three police constables sustained injuries. According to the police, Kumaresan, a special branch police constable attached to Appakudal police station consumed poison due to family problems on Friday afternoon. He was shifted to a private hospital at Erode.

Three constables - Murugesan of Velliturupur, Dawood Basha and Senthil of Ammapet went to the hospital in a van and while returning the vehicle collided with a lorry coming from Kuntur near Kalingarayanpalayam. The policemen were admitted to the Erode Government Headquarters Hospital. The Chitode police registered a case against the lorry driver and are investigating.

Body found

ERODE: The Erode South Police on Friday recovered the body of a female infant from a dustbin near the Surampatty Four Road junction. On receiving information that the body of an infant was lying in the dustbin, the police recovered it and registered a case.

PDS kerosene seized

SALEM: A team of food cell personnel seized 350 litres of kerosene meant for supply under Public Distribution System and arrested a person in this connection here on recently.

Official sources said following information, the personnel raided a shop in Sevvapet and found the PDS kerosene hoarded in it.

They arrested Murugan (36) of Ambal Lake road.

DMK protest

NAGERCOIL: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies have decided to organise a "dawn to dusk" bandh on Tuesday.

Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan on Saturday convened an emergency meeting to discuss the firing incidents. Representatives of the Congress, the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi participated.

Boats donated

Nagercoil: Aviva Life Insurance and Concern India Foundation have donated five fishing boats to fishermen in Pallam.

They have also launched three school projects as part of their tsunami rehabilitation work.

During the past year, as many as 97 boats and fishing nets were given away to fishermen who were affected by the tsunami in December 2004. Three school projects were launched last year to provide quality education to 1,337 children. - Staff Reporter

Good response to health camps

Nagapattinam: Free health camps conducted under the `Varumun Kappom' scheme have evoked a good response in rural areas of the district, said the Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, on Thursday.

Inaugurating the 34th free health camp at Tiruvengadu, the Collector said that more than 44,000 people were benefited through the camps and pointed out that nearly 1,500 people turned up at Tiruvengadu on Thursday.

Cyclist killed

Tiruchi: A cyclist, Thirugnanasambandam (80), was fatally knocked down by a speeding unknown vehicle on the Asur branch road near Thuvakudi in the district on Friday. The police have registered a case.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 78.74 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 972 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

4 killed in wall collapse

MADURAI: Four persons were crushed to death and three injured in a wall collapse at a brick kiln in Usilampatti in the wee hours of Saturday. The deceased were identified as V. Gubendran (30), K. Vigneshwar (14), R. Senthil Kumar (21) and P. Pounraj (17).

The victims were fast asleep when the weak structure fell on them, the police said. The incident took place around 3 a.m. P. Sathyamoorthy (17), M. Vijaykumar (26) and S. Ganesan (20) were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. — Staff Reporter

Fencing champion gets Rs.1-lakh assistance

CHENNAI: C.A. Bhavanidevi, a fencing champion from Old Washermanpet in North Chennai, who is heading for Turkey to participate in the World Fencing Championship, has received Rs.1 lakh assistance from the State Government.

The championships will be held between April 10 and 18. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi provided the assistance as Bhavanidevi comes from a poor family and could not afford the trip. — Special Correspondent

PCO call tariff revised

CHENNAI: While announcing a revision in tariff of PCO calls, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has said STD facility will be provided to all local and coin collection box PCOs. Operators have been requested to make the necessary devices available within the next 15 days.

All local calls within Chennai and Tamil Nadu will have a pulse rate of 60 seconds and a unit rate of Re.1, inclusive of Service Tax. STD calls (outside Tamil Nadu) within a 50-km radius to any landline will have a pulse rate of 60 seconds and to cellular phones, 20 seconds with the unit rate being Re. 1. STD calls above 50 km will have a 20-second pulse rate and Re.1 unit rate.

Local PCOs that do not want to upgrade to STD PCO may intimate their intention in writing to the area DGM before April 9. The date of implementation of the revised tariff will be announced later. — Special Correspondent

Pre-medical exam to be conducted today

CHENNAI: The All India Pre-Medical/Per-Dental (Preliminary) Examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be held on Sunday. About 4,000 students from Tamil Nadu will take the examination in six city centres.

CBSE joint secretary M.V.V.Prasada Rao said about 40,000 students were taking the examination all over the country. — Staff Reporter

Second class train fare reduced

CHENNAI: Second class train fare (non-suburban) in all passenger and mail/express trains other than super-fast mail/express trains will be reduced by a rupee from April 1. In first AC and second AC there will be a fare reduction ranging between two per cent and eight per cent depending on the period (lean/peak) of travel. However, there will be no change in first class and Garib Rath Express fares. Supplementary charge for second class will be reduced by 20 per cent from Rs. 10 to Rs. 8 per ticket.

Refund of difference in fare for tickets issued at pre-revised rates will be done at all passenger reservation centres prior to commencement of journey or up to three days after completion of journey. Thereafter, passengers can claim the difference by sending the original ticket to the Chief Commercial Manager (Refunds) of the Zonal Railway, where the journey originated or terminated. — Special Correspondent
